The long battle that the LGBTQ community of India has fought has finally come to a happy end. The verdict which came out on Thursday, has offered relief to the Lesbians and Gay community of the country. In a landmark judgement, Supreme Court struck down the Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalised homosexuality in India. A five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud, Rohinton Fali Nariman, A M Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra, issued the verdict on a bunch of petitions filed to scrap the law. The bench had earlier reserved its verdict on July 17.
As the verdict was announced, the entire country went into the mood of celebrations as the section was scrapped out of the constitution of India. Among those who were celebrating were also many Bollywood celebrities including Karan Johar, Ayushmann Khurrana, Arjun Kapoor, etc.
Expressing their joy on the landmark decision, they tweeted:
