Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious project ‘Padmavati’ has been engulfed by clouds of uncertainty with production house Eros backing out of the movie. Reportedly, the high budget of Rs 170 crore is the reason that Eros quit it. This decision will definitely threaten the existence of the movie as in lack of money chances are that the movie may get shelved.
Earlier, it was reported that the movie will be produced by two renowned production houses- Eros International and Viacom 18. Due to the high budget no single production house agreed to put so many eggs in one basket. So the cost was said to be divided between two.
But now that Eros has backed out it is unsure if Viacom 18 will continue to sponsor the project.
This is not the first time that Eros has quit a movie because of a high budget. Only a few weeks ago, it was confirmed that the production house backed out of actor Ajay Devgn’s ‘Shivaay’ due to the same reason. The movie will now have Pen India and Ajay Devgn films as the name of co-producers.
This decision of Eros has left SLB in a soup and engulfed ‘Padmavati’ in clouds of uncertainty.
Speaking about this an insider told a leading daily that it is doubtful if any production house would shed that amount of money. “Not for a costume drama, especially after the debacle of Mohenjo Daro,” said the insider.
This is not the first time that ‘Padmavati’ has been burdened with problems. From who will star in the movie to who will get a meatier role, this movie has made it to the headlines often. Though there has still been no confirmation about the cast from the team, Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh are said to be in it.
It was also reported a few days ago that Ranveer was throwing tantrums to SLB irking the latter.
Now this fresh problem may push work on this already delayed project further. It should be noted that if the movie finds no takers it is highly probable that it would be shelved.
