As expected, superstar Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rustom’ has taken the lead at the box office against Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Mohenjo Daro’ on the first day. Both the movies, which released yesterday the 12th of August, had created waves around themselves but seems only ‘Rustom’ could translate it to moolah at the box office.
Reports have it that Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rustom’ minted Rs 14.11 cr on Friday at the box office. The movie drew viewers in the early morning shows and the trend continued till evening and late night shows.
‘Rustom’ has thus become Akshay’s third consecutive movie of this year to earn over Rs 10 crore on the first day. ‘Airlift’ had earned Rs 12.35 cr on first day and ‘Housefull 3’ had minted Rs 15.21 cr.
Critics have sung praises for Akshay’s role as Rustom Pavri, a disciplined officer being tried for the murder of his wife’s lover. The movie features Ileana D’ Cruz as Cynthia, Akshay’s wife.
The numbers for ‘Mohenjo Daro’ have not been quite welcoming. The high-on-budget dream project of Ashutosh Gowariker earned less than Rs 9 crore on the first day. The movie’s collections limited itself to Rs 8.87 cr.
These collections point out that the movie needs to pick up pace over the extended weekend for a decent collection.
‘Mohenjo Daro’ opened to mix reviews. While Hrithik’s portrayal of Sarman was appreciated, the plot was touted as sloppy by few.
