The film will tell the story of how a young team under the captaincy of newbie Kapil Dev defeated West Indies to win the World Cup trophy for the first time.

Earlier in a statement, Kabir Khan said that he couldn't have thought about anyone else rather than Ranveer for the titular role. The Bajrangi Bhaijaan filmmaker said, ''As a young school boy, when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup, I had no idea that from that day onwards cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalizing the script.''

In an interview to PTI, Ranveer who impressed everyone with his performance in Padmaavat said, ''t should be exciting to get into the skin of such a legendary player. I am really looking forward to it but it is going to be a while before I commence work on it.''

Before '83, Ranveer will be seen as a rapper in Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy, co-starring Alia Bhatt. Looks of both the leading actors recently got revealed, making right kind of buzz. The actor will next be seen in Rohit Shetty's Simmba, the poster of which shows him in the role of a quirky cop.
