The 18th edition of the International Indian Film Academy or IIFA Awards witnessed glitz and glamour to the fullest. From Alia Bhatt to Karan Johar to Salman Khan, B-town celebs stunned New York city. While, Udta Punjab and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil won big at the gala, Aamir Khan’s Dangal and Akshay Kumar’s Rustom were completely ignored at IIFA Awards 2017. Such kind of ignorance was noticed by all and even Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani was bothered by such “hypocrisy”.
The CBFC chairperson slammed the big Bollywood gala for not nominating Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar. “Look at the hypocrisy. They haven’t even nominated Aamir Khan for Dangal and Akshay Kumar for Airlift and Rustom just because they wouldn’t attend their weekend holiday plans masquerading as an awards function”, he said.
Further Pahlaj Nihalani said that IIFA had lost its relevance when Amitabh Bachchan opted out of it in 2011. “I think the day Mr Bachchan opted out, IIFA lost its dignity and relevance. In 18 years, how much global impact has Indian cinema made and what hand did IIFA have in this?”, he questioned.
He also challenged IIFA’s claim of taking Indian films to an international platform. He said that earlier India has films from several states, which got token representation at the awards but now, there’s only Bollywood. “So why do they call themselves the International Indian films awards? It’s such a shame! Bollywood is not Indian cinema”, Pahlaj Nihalani concluded.
