Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter’s Dhadak released on July 20 and has been getting good numbers on the board. On its opening day, Dhadak earned Rs 8.71 crore, and overtook the first-day collection of Student Of The Year to become the highest opening Bollywood film featuring newcomers. The film raked in Rs 11.04 crore on its second day, taking its total collection so far to Rs 19.75 crore. Now, it is making waves at the international markets as well. The film has earned $858k which comes to around Rs 5.90 crore.
Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “#Dhadak springs a pleasant surprise Overseas... Films starring newcomers, generally, find limited takers... But #Dhadak is an exception... Total: approx $ 858k [₹ 5.90 cr] North America: $ 265k UAE-GCC: $ 322k UK-Ireland: $ 96k ANZ: $ 100k Pakistan: $ 47k”.
On the first day itself, the film managed to make two records. One, it became the highest opener for any film with debutantes in the lead and also the eight highest opener of this year. Raazi had proudly clinched that spot till now but Dhadak replaced it. The film will earn some more moolah on Sunday because it is riding on good word of mouth. Now it seems even overseas has lapped up the film.
The source material of Dhadak, Sairat, was a massive success at the box office. The film was such a craze that theatres had to introduce additional shows at midnight and 3am to cope with the demand.
Directed by Shashank Khaitan, Dhadak is the story of two lovers, Parthavi Singh (Janhvi Kapoor) and Madhukar Bagla (Ishaan Khatter), who belong to different castes. All hell breaks loose when Parthavi's family discovers their liaison, and the couple is forced to elope. But theirs is no fairytale romance, as the audience soon discovers.
