Gully Boy, directed by Zoya Akhtar opened to rave reviews from critics and audience alike on February 14. It has been week 2 and Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt starrer film is still going strong at the box office. The movie is not just being praised for the performances of its actors but also the way the characters have been written. All hail Zoya Akhtar! Its day 10 and Total Dhamaal has released giving Gully Boy a tough competition but the story of Murad is still touching millions of hearts.
The movie which entered the coveted Rs 100 crore on Day 8 has raked in Rs 111.25 crore so far. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to put latest figures. He wrote, ''#GullyBoy is back on track... Records 80.77% growth on [second] Sat [vis-à-vis second Fri]... Metros - in Mumbai circuit specifically - are calling the shots... [Week 2] Fri 3.90 cr, Sat 7.05 cr. Total: ₹ 111.25 cr. India biz.''
The movie which is loosely based on the life of rappers Divine and Naezy has some of the brilliant performances by Vijay Raaz, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Kalki Koechlin and Vijay Varma among others. On a related note, Gully Boy is also the second highest opener of Ranveer after Simmba. Gully Boy raked in Rs 19.40 crore on day 1.
Meanwhile, Big B is also impressed with Gully Boy. The megastar sent a token of love and appreciation to Alia Bhatt and Siddhant Chaturvedi. The actors received flowers and heart-warming note from Amitabh Bachchan. While Alia played Safeena, Siddhant essayed the role of Murad's mentor, MC Sher in the flick.
In Gully Boy, Zoya Akhtar who has directed and co-written the film, has pinched an utmost realistic and hard-hitting social issue of increasing economic gap in the society. The film reminded me of the viral picture of Mumbai that showed how one side of the city has sky-touching multistoreys while the other side is inhabited by the slum-dwellers. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself jerking a tear or two during the song Doori, beautifully penned by Javed Akhtar and voiced by Ranveer Singh himself. A scene where a woman is crying at the backseat of the car Ranveer Singh was driving, the societal gap between them hit us hard with the truth. Wiping other’s tears is a basic human instinct, however, nowadays even that is clouded by the realisation of rich and poor. ‘Tere aansoon pochu itni meri aukaat nahi.’ Sounds bizarre, but its true.
