Actress Deepika Padukone’s fight with depression brought down the veil on darkness of mental illness. For the first time in 2014, Deepika revealed what she was going through and recently on Monday she spoke about it again. While the sought after actress was barring her heart on World Mental Heath Day, she said that her mother helped her to win this battle.
A closer look at Deepika’s confession tells the need of a shoulder to lean on. Thanks to the diva, topics like mental illness have made it to the dinner table in households, but just talking won’t help. Identifying the signs is one of the steps towards helping your loved ones.
A teary eyed Deepika had said that it was her mother Ujjala Padukone who asked her to seek help for the problem. She added that with her mother and doctor’s help, she recovered.
But not all are as lucky as Deepika was.
Without even being in the know, you might be creating difficulties for the ones who are suffering from mental illness. By thinking that the words, ‘I am fine’ carry absolute truth, you may be pushing the person on a dark path.
During these trying times, when depression creeps in easily a helping hand is all one needs.
Cases of how filmmaker Karan Johar handled depression or how actress Anushka Sharma took pills for anxiety show that mental illness doesn’t care about success. One may be at peak of the stardom, success and still feel emptiness in their lives.
In Deepika’s words, depression creeps in without any reason. For some it could be environmental, for others traumatic past or stress or sometimes biological. Though the exact cause is unknown, one may do their bit to help their loved ones.
Lending an ear and becoming the shoulder to cry on might help the sick person win half the battle. Based on the same thought is the new video by the Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF). This NGO was launched by Deepika along with Indian Psychiatric Society and the Indian Medical Association to spread awareness about mental health.
After a look at the video, you will be compelled to ask that important person in your life the truth behind ‘I am fine’.
