Bollywood’s latest release Batti Gul Meter Chalu starring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor witnessed considerable growth on the second day of its opening. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, “#BattiGulMeterChalu witnesses 17.75% growth on Day 2, but since the starting point was low, the 2-day total is lacklustre... Needs miraculous growth on Day 3 - in double digits - for a respectable weekend total... Fri 6.76 cr, Sat 7.96 cr. Total: ₹ 14.72 cr. India biz. #BGMC”.

The makers need not be discouraged with these numbers as the audience these days wait for the word of mouth publicity and BGMC has received mostly positive reviews. Something similar happened to Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan that hit the screens on September 14. Its business picked up during the weekend. However, in the end, that wasn’t enough.

BGMC has released alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Manto that’s receiving praise from all quarters. The morning shows of the film was cancelled on Friday due to technical glitch, so its business is likely to suffer as well.

BGMC is about a lawyer’s fight against the corrupt power companies after his friend commits suicide.

Directed by Shree Narayan Singh of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha fame, Batti Gul Meter Chalu also stars Yami Gautam and Divyendu Sharma in pivotal roles. The dramedy deals with the issue of frequent power cuts in the country with one of the primary characters receiving an outrageously high electricity bill which motivates Shahid to take matters in his hands.

"I feel proud to be a part of this film. One would think it (electricity) is a small issue but it is not for others. As actors if we can represent those issues, it would be good as we have the opportunity to say something nice otherwise we will lose the chance. We are not making a documentary film as it will never reach anywhere. So you have to make it entertaining and take mainstream actors so you can reach out to a wider audience," said Shahid in an interview to a leading daily.
