New Delhi: In terms of box office collections, Bollywood is not seeing good days. After the much talked about biopic ‘Sarbjit’ failed to rake money, three hindi films followed suit. This week, ‘Waiting’, ‘Phobia’ and ‘Veerapan’ released but they fell flat when compared to ‘The Angry Birds’ movie.
‘The Angry Birds movie’ opened to 15% occupancy according to media reports. This can be owed to summer vacations and the popularity of the game in India. On the other hand, ‘Phobia’ and ‘Waiting’ settled for 2-3% occupancy while ‘Veerapan’ got 7-8%.
These movies, though, spanned across various genres did not pose much of an interest for viewers. ‘Veerapan’ failed to get good reviews and many critics said that Ram Gopal Verma has lost his direction streak.
‘Phobia’; a psycho thriller starring Radhika Apte got rave reviews but the reviews did not translate to footfall in the theatres.
‘Waiting’, a drama film with Kalki Koechlin and Naseeruddin Shah in lead; got good word of mouth.
All these movies have now only good word of mouth to ensure their collections are decent.
It seems like the dry run of Bollywood will only end when Akshay Kumar’s ‘Housefull 3’ releases on June 3. The film is a multi starrer with many prominent names.
