On Sunday (October 2) actress Alia Bhatt visited the women’s self defence centre run by actor Akshay Kumar and Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray. While on one hand Alia Bhatt was mesmerised by the way women defended themselves, one particular incident left the young actress emotional.
At the event the heart wrenching tale of a 30-year old woman who faced domestic violence made both Akshay and Alia emotional. An insider from the event told a leading daily that when the woman came up on stage to collect her prize, she narrated her story of the domestic violence she faced.
The woman told that after she learnt martial arts, her husband never dared to raise his hand on her. After the woman’s speech, Alia told Akshay she was moved by it.
The ‘Udta Punjab’ actress also lauded Akshay for doing a noble cause of training women and girls self defence for free. At the event, Alia also met all the girls and learnt about their experiences.
Started in 2014, the self defence centre has trained over 9,000 girls.
Earlier this year, a student from Akhsay’s self defense centre had shared her story which had gone viral. The student Shreya Naik had said that what she learnt at the academy helped her to teach her molester a lesson. Shreya had said that when a man pounced at her she defended herself, and took him to the police station. Akshay had also appreciated Shreya for her courage.
Just like Shreya and the woman who narrated her story, Akshay Kumar’s academy is it seems doing a great job at empowering women.
