Aamir Khan’s film Thugs of Hindostan was one among the most anticipated films of 2018. However, it tanked at the Indian box office, despite becoming the highest opener of 2018. The negative word of mouth and lack of script caused the doom of the film at the Indian box office. A couple of months after the release in India, Aamir Khan and YRF released the film in China, since the actor enjoys a massive fan following in the neighbouring country. However, to everyone’s surprise, Thugs of Hindostan faced rejection even at China’s box office. The film failed to recover its production cost and only made around Rs 32 crore only. For the starters, Thugs of Hindostan was made at a gigantic budget of Rs 300 crore.
Tweeting about the box office collection, trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “#ThugsOfHindostan faces rejection in #China... Remained at low levels over the weekend... Fri $ 1.51 mn... Sat $ 1.56 mn... Sun $ 1.61 mn... Total: $ 4.71 mn [₹ 32.93 cr]... Total includes previews held earlier.”
Despite having an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif in the film, Thugs of Hindostan failed to pull the audience to the theatres. However, the film recorded the highest pre-sales of all time for a Hindi film. It stands at no. 3 spot after Baahubali- The Conclusion and Avengers- Infinity War.
On the first day at domestic box office, Thugs of Hindostan earned around Rs 50 crore making it the highest Diwali opener in 40 years. However, the numbers plummeted day by day, courtesy word of mouth.
