Karnataka elections 2023 LIVE updates: The poll battle in Karnataka intensified as politicians are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters.

Karnataka elections 2023: As the voting date is approaching in Karnataka, political parties stepped up their poll campaigns to woo voters in the southern state. The rulling BJP is making efforts to retain power in the state riding the crest of the popularity of PM Narendra Modi, while Congress is expecting electoral fortune banking on anti-incumbency and a series of corruption-related cases against the leaders belonging to the ruling party. The last date for making nominations is April 20. The papers will be scrutinised on April 21 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is April 24. Of the total 224 constituencies, 36 seats have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and 15 for Scheduled Tribes. The counting of votes is on May 13. The state has 5.24 crore voters and 58,282 polling stations.

    Congress replaces candidate against CM as it releases 5th list of candidates for Karnataka polls

    The Congress on Wednesday announced its fifth list of three candidates for the May 10 Assembly elections, replacing the one against Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in Shiggaon. A day after fielding Mohammed Yousuf Savanur as its candidate from Shiggaon in Haveri district, the party nominated Yasir Ahmed Khan Phatan in his place. The party has fielded A C Srinivasa from Pulakeshinagar by denying ticket to its sitting MLA R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy, who today filed nomination as an independent candidate after it was clear that he will not be renominated. Murthy, a Dalit, had won the 2018 assembly election with the highest margin of 81,626 votes, creating a record.

    Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah, and Jagadish Shettar who recently quit the BJP were among the prominent figures who filed their nominations for the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka on Wednesday. With just a day left for formally entering the poll fray, and as tomorrow happens to be 'Amavasya', which is considered inauspicious by certain sections of people, most of the candidates filed their papers today. All the candidates were accompanied by large numbers of supporters, beating drums, waving party flags and shouting slogans. Bommai filed his nomination from his traditional seat of Shiggaon in Haveri district. He was accompanied by BJP national president J P Nadda and Kannada film star Sudeep.

    Karnataka Minister Sunil Kumar files nomination from Karkala for Assembly polls

    Karnataka Minister for Energy, Kannada and Culture V Sunil Kumar on Wednesday filed his nomination from his sitting seat of Karkala in Udupi district, for the May 10 Assembly polls.
    Earlier, he marched along with thousands of party workers from Swaraj Maidan till the taluk panchayat ground where he addressed the gathering. Later, he visited the taluk office and filed his papers. The Minister was accompanied by Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat, MLC Pratap Simha Nayak, Kundapur MLA Halady Srinivas Shety, Kaup BJP candidate Gurme Suresh Shetty and many party workers.

    Karnataka polls: Cong replaces its candidate against CM Bommai

    The Congress on Wednesday replaced Mohammed Yousuf Savanur as its candidate from the Shiggaon constituency in Karnataka against Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai, and has now fielded Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan. The party released its fifth list of three new candidates fielding B C Muddugangadhar from the Mulbagal-Sc seat, D K Mohan from K R Pura nd A C Srivasa from the Pulakeshinagar-SC seat. The party replaced Savanur from the Shiggaon constituency with Pathan. The constituency is currently represented by CM Bommai. Bommai had defeated Congress candidates Sayed Azeempeer Khadri in the 2018 elections. The party has so far released the names of 219 candidates for the 224-strong assembly. The last date for filing of nominations is April 20. The assembly polls will be held on May 10 and the results will be announced on May 13. The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in the southern state.

    Days after resigning from the Karnataka assembly over his name not figuring in any of the Congress' candidates lists for the May 10 assembly polls, R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy, filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Pulakeshinagar constituency, on Wednesday. The Congress was in a dilemma on giving ticket to Murthy, a Dalit who had won the 2018 assembly election with the highest margin of 81,626 votes and created a record, party sources said. The grand old party has announced A C Srinivasa as its candidate for the constituency, after Murthy filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate.

    Press Council guidelines ahead of Karnataka elections

    Ahead of the Karnataka elections, the Press Council of India on Tuesday advised the print media to follow the norms of journalistic conduct on paid news. In advisories issued here, the Press Council of India (PCI) also cautioned against publication of any news that may appear to predict the results of the elections before the date of poll in Karnataka. Noting that newspapers should not misconstrue or misquote the statements given by any leader, the PCI said the statements quoted in editorial should project the true spirit of what was being tried to be conveyed by them.

    Top leaders file nominations for Karnataka Assembly elections

    Karnataka Minister R Ashoka, who is taking on state Congress president D K Shivakumar in Kanakapura, former deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi who recently joined the Congress and JD(S)' YSV Datta, who recently rejoined the party, were among the prominent leaders, who filed their nominations on Tuesday, for the May 10 Assembly polls. With only two days left for formally entering the fray, candidates from various political parties filed their papers by holding roadshows and going on a temple run along with a large number of their supporters, amidst drum beats, waving of party flags and shouting of slogans. Ashoka, a prominent Vokkaliga face in the BJP, has been fielded against Shivakumar, the community's strong man from Congress in his home constituency of Kanakapura, as part of the ruling party's strategy to give a tough fight to opposition leaders in their turf. Ashoka filed his nomination at Kanakapura in the presence of BJP national general secretary in-charge of Karnataka Arun Singh and Ramanagara district in-charge Minister C N Ashwath Narayan. They visited a temple and held a massive roadshow ahead of filing papers before the election returning officer.
