The stage is set for Assembly elections in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. While the first four are ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the last one has a Congress government. The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states. Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous and one of the most politically crucial states, is already witnessing marathon rallies by top politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties. From Congress' side, its senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is spearheading the campaign. She is addressing rallies across the length and breadth of the state, promising to bring a change if her party forms the next government. Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati, both former CMs of Uttar Pradesh, are also leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters.

    Meghalaya's ruling National People's Party (NPP), newly-formed Kuki People's Alliance (KPA) and Maharashtra's ruling Shiv Sena and NCP announced candidates for the Manipur assembly polls on Thursday. Conrad Sangma-led NPP released its third list of nine candidates for the elections. Among those fielded by the NPP are Sapam Kangleipal Meitei in Lamlai, Yumkhaibam Erabot in Wangkhei and M Rameshwar Singh in Kakching. NCP named candidates in five seats -- George T Haokip in Saikot, Poonam Rani Wangkhem in Khetrigao, Khuraijam Ratankumar Singh in Khurai, Oinam Haridas Singh in Wangkhem and Md Islamuddin Khan in Keirao.

    PM to address digital rallies in UP, Uttarakhand on Friday

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address two digital rallies on February 4 in poll-bound Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, the BJP said on Thursday.
    In rally for Uttar Pradesh, Modi will digitally address assembly segments from the districts of Meerut, Noida, Ghaziabad, Aligarh and Hapur, the party said.
    Similarly in the rally for Uttarakhand, he will address assembly segments from Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and Champawat.
    It will be Modi's second set of digital rallies, with the first one having been held on January 31.
    Modi may also address political rallies digitally in Punjab later, party sources said.
    The first phase of the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh is on February 10, and the second and third phases are on February 14 and 20.

    Noida: Samajwadi Party seeks action against police commissioner, DCP

    The Samajwadi Party on Thursday wrote to the Election Commission and urged it to take action against two senior Gautam Buddh Nagar police officers, alleging electoral malpractice in support of the BJP. The Samajwadi Party alleged that Police Commissioner Alok Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police Ranvijay Singh are directing police personnel to vote for the BJP in the upcoming assembly polls. There was no immediate comment from police.
    “They are directing police officers and personnel to vote for the BJP and pressure being built on them for creating a pro-BJP atmosphere. This is impacting the election and is a breach of model code of conduct,” SP's state president Naresh Uttam Patel alleged in the letter.

    UP polls phase I: Richest candidate has assets worth Rs 148 crore, two have nil

    Among those in the fray for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, the richest candidate holds assets worth over Rs 148 crore, while two nominees who have declared zero assets, according to poll reforms advocacy group ADR.

    Of the financially bottom-three candidates excluding those with zero assets, two have declared having around Rs 1,000, while one has Rs 10,000, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) stated.

    The average of assets per candidate contesting in the first phase of the polls is Rs 3.72 crores, it said in a report in which it analysed self-sworn affidavits of the nominees.

    Rahul Gandhi launches welfare scheme for farm labourers in Chhattisgarh

    Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a financial assistance scheme of the Chhattisgarh government for landless labourers of rural areas with around 3.55 lakh beneficiaries instantly receiving Rs 2,000 each in their bank accounts as the first installment under the plan.

    Gandhi, during his day-long visit to the state, launched 'Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Bhumiheen Krishi Mazdoor Nyay Yojana' at a function organised in Science College Ground in Chhattisgarh's capital Raipur.

    AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi says that 3-4 rounds of bullets were fired upon his vehicle near Chhajarsi toll plaza while he was heading to Delhi after an election-related event in Kithaur, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

    "I was leaving for Delhi after a poll event in Kithaur, Meerut (UP). 3-4 rounds of bullets were fired upon my vehicle by 2 people near Chhajarsi toll plaza; they were a total of 3-4 people. The tyres of my vehicle punctured, I left on another vehicle," Owaisi said.

    UP polls: Nishad Party releases 2nd list of 6 candidates

    The Nishad Party has released its second list of six candidates for UP assembly elections 2022. On Sunday, the party had declared four candidates. The candidates declared on Wednesday were Sarvan Nishad from Chauri Chaura (Gorakhpur), Prashant Singh `Rahul’ from Handia (Prayagraj), Piyush Ranjan Nishad from Karchhana (Prayagraj), Subhash Pasi from Saidpur (Ghazipur), Anil Kumar Tripathi from Menhdawal (Santkabir Nagar), and Raj Prasad Upadhyay `Rajbabu’ from Sultanpur Sadar (Jaisinghpur).     BSP chief Mayawati on Wednesday hit out at BJP, SP and Congress for not doing enough for Dalits and asserted that her party has a track record of working for all sections of society as she launched her party's campaign for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. Terming the rival parties "anti-Dalit", she said though they make various promises in their manifestos ahead of polls, they forget about them after coming to power. Mayawati, who has been conspicuous by her absence from the high-octane campaigning in the state, also said she has been living in Lucknow for a year and working to rebuild the BSP. She said some "casteist media groups" are trying to demoralise BSP supporters by saying that their party leaders are missing on the ground. The BSP is contesting all 403 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. The party has declared names of candidates for the majority of the seats.

    Goa polls: AP candidates sign legal affidavits

    Ahead of Assembly Elections in Goa, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidates on Wednesday signed a legal affidavit and took a pledge to remain loyal to the party. The candidates further pledged that they will work honestly if they are elected in the upcoming polls.
    Goa chief ministerial candidate Amit Palekar administered the oath to all candidates.

    UP polls: SP candidate refuses to fight poll on new seat, seeks to return party ticket

    A Samajwadi Party candidate from the Matera assembly seat in Bahraich district on Wednesday sought to return the party ticket, saying he cannot fight on an entirely new seat instead of the one he had been tending for the last 10 years. Haji Mohammad Ramzan announced his intention to return the SP ticket hours after he was made the official candidate from the constituency.

    Talking to reporters, Ramzan said he has been working for the Shravasti assembly segment for the last 10 years and the people there want him to contest from that seat and win it.

    "It is not possible to contest an election from a new area like Matera (Bahraich) just before the election," Ramzan said.

    Taking a swipe at Aslam Rayani, who has been given the party ticket from Shravasti seat, Ramzan asked him why was he running away from the Bhinga seat from where he is the sitting MLA.

    UP polls: BJP MLA from Bara seat quits party

    The BJP MLA from reserved Bara assembly constituency in Prayagraj district quit the party on Wednesday in protest against allegedly being kept in dark about the party's intention to leave the seat for a coalition partner candidate. BJP MLA Ajay Kumar told reporters that he has resigned from the primary membership of the party.

    Explaining his reason for taking the drastic step, Dr Kumar said he had been hearing of the BJP leadership’s intention to leave the Bara seat for a candidate of alliance partner Apna Dal (S).

    “I have no remorse against it but I have been hurt by the fact that none of the top leaders of the party deemed it necessary to take me into confidence and inform me about it,” he said.
