Assembly Election 2022 Updates: 'We will give employment to 4 lakh, LPG cylinder at Rs 500'

The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab.

The stage is set for Assembly elections in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. While the first four are ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the last one has a Congress government. The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states. Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous and one of the most politically crucial states, is already witnessing marathon rallies by top politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties. From Congress' side, its senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is spearheading the campaign. She is addressing rallies across the length and breadth of the state, promising to bring a change if her party forms the next government. Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati, both former CMs of Uttar Pradesh, are also leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters. The seven-phased polls in Uttar Pradesh will take place on February 10, 14, 20, 23, 27, March 3 and 7. Voting in Manipur will take place in two phases on February 27 and March 3, while Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa elections will be conducted in a single phase on February 14. The results will be declared on March 10.

    Polling days in UP to be paid holidays for electors of that state employed in Delhi

    The Delhi government on Saturday announced that polling days in Uttar Pradesh would be paid holidays for the people from that state employed in the national capital so that they can exercise their franchise. Polling in Uttar Pradesh would be held in seven phases starting on February 10. The second phase would be held on February 14, the third on February 20, the fourth on February 23, the fifth on February 27 and the final phase on March 7. Counting of votes will be held on March 10. According to a notice by the General Administrative Department of the Delhi government, the waiver applies to every person employed in any business, trade, industrial undertaking or any other establishment in the National Capital Territory of Delhi and entitled to vote in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. There should be no deduction in salary on account of holiday on the polling day, it said.

    Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of leaving farmers on roads for a year amid the COVID-19 pandemic and said his party will never do that. Addressing a virtual rally in Kichha here ahead of the upcoming Uttarakhand Assembly polls, the Congress leader also said India does not have a prime minister but a king who expects the public to keep quiet when he takes a decision. Gandhi said the Congress will not shut its doors on farmers, youths, labourers or the poor and it wants a partnership with them.     The BSP on Saturday released a list of 54 candidates for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, fielding Khwaja Samsuddin against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur Urban constituency. In its latest list, the Mayawati-led party has given tickets to seven Muslim candidates. The Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded Santosh Tiwari from Fazilnagar assembly constituency in Kushinagar district. Tiwari will take on Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate and former BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya. The BSP has given tickets to Prateek Pandey from Katehari and to Chandra Prakash Verma from Akbarpur. Both constituencies fall under Ambedkarnagar district. In the 2017 state assembly elections, BSP's Lalji Verma and Ram Achal Rajbhar had won from Katehari and Akbarpur respectively.

    Cash amounting to Rs 35 lakh seized from car in UP's Mathura: Police

    Cash amounting to Rs 35 lakh was seized from a car at the Kumher border between Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan here on Friday, police said. "Imran, the driver of the car, failed to furnish details about the money," Superintendent of Police (rural) Shrish Chandra said. He said an SST team led by magistrate Navneet Garg, with the help of police, was checking vehicles at the inter-state border when the car was intercepted. The money was kept in a bag in the luggage space of the vehicle, police said. SST teams have been deputed at strategic locations to check the use of illicit money ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, officials said. The 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly is scheduled to go to polls in seven phases from February 10 to March 7 and the counting of votes will be taken up on March 10.

    UP polls: Apna Dal(K) ‘returns’ seats allocated as part of alliance with SP

    Apna Dal(K) said it has "given back" the seats allotted to it as part of the seat sharing agreement with the SP and has asked they ally to first "satisfy its own people" seeking tickets. The Samajwadi Party, however, said there is no dispute with Apna Dal(K) regarding ticket distribution and such "minor issues" will be resolved soon.     Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Friday said that after March 10 people of state will bid a farewell to Samajwadi Party alliance, Congress, and the Bahujan Samaj Party. He said before 2017 the state was reeling under lawlessness, “goondaism”, “mafiasm”, riots and incidents of kidnapping. He said people of the state were forced to leave UP due to “goondaism” of Samajwadi Party. Maurya was in the city to campaign for BJP candidates from Bah, Fatehabad, and Fatehpur Sikri seats. "As the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power, nobody had to leave UP. Only those malcontents are leaving UP, who used to torture innocent people,” he said. "In 2022, SP chief is dreaming of winning 403 seats, but they would also lose 47 seats they had won in the 2017 assembly election of UP," he said. He claimed that no goons can afford to commit “land grab” any more or cause riots. "Now the reign of goondas, mafias has ended from Uttar Pradesh," Maurya said.
