Assembly Election 2022: Congress picks Channi as CM face for Punjab; AAP, SAD slam grand old party
The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab.
The stage is set for Assembly elections in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, Goa and Punjab. While the first four are ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, the last one has a Congress government. The Election Commission has already announced the dates and all the political parties have started flexing their muscles in the poll-bound states. Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous and one of the most politically crucial states, is already witnessing marathon rallies by top politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties. From Congress' side, its senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is spearheading the campaign. She is addressing rallies across the length and breadth of the state, promising to bring a change if her party forms the next government. Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati, both former CMs of Uttar Pradesh, are also leaving no stone unturned to woo the voters.

Samajwadi Party fielded criminals, alleges Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday targeted Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, accusing him of fielding criminals in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
Addressing public meetings in Baghpat and Amroha, Shah said the upcoming state election is being fought to put an end to the patronage to criminals.
He also praised Yogi Adityanath-led state government for action against criminals.
"Today, criminals and mafia are seen either in jail, outside the boundary of UP or in the list of candidates of Akhilesh Yadav. Today, Azam Khan, Atiq Ahmed and Mukhtar Ansari are in jail and it is so because there is a BJP government in the state," he said.
Sharpening his attack on the SP chief, he said Yadav these days only remembers how much money was recovered from the person linked with the “Samajwadi Itra”, apparently referring to raids by central agencies on the premises of a perfume seller.

UP polls: On protest for 26 years, ex-teacher to contest against Yogi
He has been on protest for 26 years and now has decided to contest against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur.
Vijay Singh, 59, a former school teacher, said, "I have done everything within my means to free the government land from the clutches of the mafia. In 2012, I met the then Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav who set up a committee to probe my complaint but nothing happened afterwards. When Yogi became chief minister, I approached him and he assured me of an impartial inquiry, which had confirmed the authenticity of my claim in its report in 2019.I have visited Lucknow 30 times but no action has been taken to reclaim the land."
Singh was 'deeply disturbed' by the grabbing of public land in his Chhudana village by the land mafia in 1996 and he quit his job and sat on a dharna at Muzaffarnagar collectorate to protest against encroachment of public land. His battle against the land mafia earned him space in several books of record but failed to spur the successive regimes in Uttar Pradesh.
"Now, I will go to the public. Let them see what this system has done to me. Twenty-six years is not a short time. I have given my life for a just cause," he said.

Why mafias in jail dear to Akhilesh Yadav: Nadda attacks SP ahead of UP polls
Attacking Samajwadi Party (SP) ahead of Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief JP Nadda on Saturday asked why the mafias lodged in jail are dear to Akhilesh Yadav.
Addressing the public meeting here, the BJP chief said, "There were only mafia and gundaraj five years ago. People have not forgotten the Muzaffarnagar riots or the forced migration of Kairana. Remember the Muzaffarnagar riots? Even the Supreme court condemned and said that the riots were a result of Akhilesh Yadav's government's failure."
"The Supreme Court also observed that the arrangements for compensation by the SP government were such that only a particular religious community could benefit. Court had said the riot was not just negligence but administrative failure. But today, there are no mafias. Now mafias are either in jail or outside the state. But why these people in jail are dear to SP? Even Akhilesh Yadav supports these people in jail from outside," he added.
