Assembly Election Updates: Punjab govt hikes honorarium of 53,000 Anganwadi workers, others
The Election Commission is due to hold assembly polls in five states -- Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand and Goa this year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that Manipur and the Northeastern region will be the hub of India's developmental mission and the under-construction highways in the state would be linked with the southeast Asian countries to boost international trade. Addressing a rally in Imphal, he said that the previous governments ignored the region, but the BJP worked for governments at the Centre and in the state ushered in a new dawn of peace and development. He said that "there is a sea change in the state now". "The entire government of India was brought to the doorsteps of Manipur people. A large number of Central ministers and leaders are working as 'sevaks' of the region. Five Central ministers are now from the region," he said. The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of five national highway construction projects, government residential quarters, Manipur Institute of Performing Arts, Centre for Invention, Innovation, Incubation and Training (CIIIT), the biggest PPP initiative in Manipur, a state-of-the-art cancer hospital, besides several other projects. The visit of the Prime Minister to poll-bound Manipur is set to further step up the political activities before the elections. Elections to the 60-seat Manipur Assembly are likely to be held in February-March along with Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa. Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India is likely to announce the poll dates next week.

Ready to bear cost of land allotment to construct Ravidas temple in Delhi: Channi
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi said on Tuesday that his government is ready to bear the entire expenditure for acquiring land for the construction of Guru Ravidas Temple at Tughlakabad in New Delhi. On the orders of the Supreme Court, the Ravidas Temple in Tughlakabad was demolished in August 2019. But later the apex court allowed the reconstruction of the temple. Devotees say that Guru Ravidas visited this place in 1509 during the reign of Sikander Lodhi. Channi said the Delhi Development Authority had recently asked the Guru Ravidas Vishram Dham Mandir Chamarwala Johar Tughlakabad Committee to deposit Rs 4.33 crore for acquiring 400 square metres of land, according to an official statement. Since the amount was quite hefty, he said various delegations approached him for seeking requisite contribution from the state government.

Ahead of PM's Punjab visit, Badal seeks economic & agricultural package
Five-time Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create the right atmosphere for his much-delayed visit to Punjab by first taking some concrete steps to expose the conspiracy behind the on-going incidents of sacrilege against Sikh faith and resolving the other major political, religious and economic issues facing the state. Badal in a statement here listed five major issues on which he said a prime ministerial package would lend credence and respectability to Modi's visit to Punjab on January 5. "As the PM, you would earn a lot of goodwill and my personal gratitude, if before coming here, you announce an economic, political, agricultural and territorial package to meet the demands of the Punjabis." The former CM also drew the PM's attention to thousands of Sikh families awaiting justice for the massacre of 1984. Badal said the PM's visit would then truly be a welcome gesture and would heal many past wounds inflicted by successive Congress governments.
