Tripura: Local bodies by-polls announced

Counting of votes would be done on October 3.

For the 3,386 vacant seats of the three-tier local rural bodies, the Tripura State Election Commission on Saturday announced by-elections on September 30. Counting of votes would be done on October 3.

Mostly due to the resignations and death of the elected representatives, the by-elections were necessitated and the notification for the same would be issued on September 4.

In the three-tier local rural bodies, out of the 3,386 vacant seats, 3,207 seats are in gram panchayats,161 in panchayat samities and 18 in zilla parishads.

The last panchayat elections were held in June 2014. 

It is pertinent to mention here that the by-elections in the state are taking place just eight months before the Lok Sabha elections 2019

Reacting to the announcements of the by-elections to the local rural bodies, opposition Communist Party of India-Marxists (CPI-M) and Congress criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for "forcible resignations of the elected representatives belonging to opposition parties," reported news agency IANS.
