Prime Minister Narendra Modi will contest from Varanasi, the Bhartiya Janata Party announced on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, senior BJP leader JP Nadda announced the list of 184 candidates for the Lok Sabha election 2019. BJP President Amit Shah will contest from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, a seat that is currently held by party’s patriarch and founder member LK Advani for last five terms.

The prominent names that feature in BJP’s first list include: Rajnath Singh from Lucknow, Mahesh Sharma from Noida, Gen VK Singh from Ghaziabad, Hema Malini from Mathura, Smriti Irani from Amethi, Union minister Jitendra Singh from Udhampur, Major Rajya Vardhan Rathore from Jaipur Rural, Babul Supriyo from Asansol, Nitin Gadkari from Nagpur, Sakshi Maharaj from Unnao and Kiren Rijiju from Arunachal East.

The BJP, however, did not announce the 17 candidates from Bihar. Asked about Bihar, JP Nadda said, “BJP Central Election Committee has finalised the names and sent it to Bihar. The NDA will make a collective announcement for the same.”

BJP list also includes Satyapal Singh from Baghpat, DV Sadananda Gowda from Bengaluru North, Bengali film actress Locket Chatterjee from Hooghly.

BJP's Kerala strongman Kummanam Rajasekharan, who recently quit as Mizoram Governor, will fight against Congress's Shashi Tharoor in Thiruvananthapuram, while Union Minister KJ Alphons will contest from Ernakulam.

Baijayant Jay Panda, who had quit Odisha's ruling Biju Janata Dal to join BJP, will contest from Kendrapara.
