Schools in eight National Capital Region (NCR) districts in Uttar Pradesh have been directed to switch to online classes due to deteriorating air quality. The affected districts include Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, Hapur, Muzaffarnagar and Shamli. The decision followed the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) by the Commission on Air Quality Management (CAQM). Physical classes will continue to be suspended until further orders are received, and the suspension may be extended depending on air pollution levels.

Compliance with GRAP Guidelines

The decision follows the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which mandates specific anti-pollution measures during severe pollution levels. GRAP actions include bans on construction activities, restrictions on older vehicles, and enhanced dust control measures. “The guidelines are being strictly enforced across all districts,” said Selva Kumari J, Divisional Commissioner (Meerut).

Pollution Control Measures Intensify

District magistrates have issued directives to curb pollution through measures such as:

  • Construction Restrictions: All construction and demolition activities under GRAP Stage-4 are prohibited.
  • Vehicle Checks: Crackdowns on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years are underway, with penalties for operating without valid PUC certificates.
  • Dust Control: Regular water sprinkling has been mandated to minimize dust pollution.
  • Stubble Burning: Officials have penalised violators involved in stubble burning, with fines totalling Rs 12,500 in Baghpat alone.

Uninterrupted Power Supply to Reduce Generator Use

To minimize reliance on diesel generators, uninterrupted power supply has been mandated in the affected areas. The transport and public works departments have also intensified checks on pollution-related violations.

The situation remains under close monitoring, with officials emphasising strict adherence to GRAP measures to mitigate the impact of pollution in the NCR region.
