The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has tightened its rules this year. According to the new rules of the board, students appearing in the Class 10 examinations in 2019 will have to secure passing marks, that is 33 per cent separately in theory and internal assessments. In other words, students will have to secure a minimum of 27 marks in 80 marks board examination and a minimum of 7 marks in 20 marks internal assessment.

The class 10 students who appeared in board exams that began on March 5 earlier this year were granted relaxation in passing marks. The board had said that the students getting overall 33 per cent marks would be considered pass.

A large number of students who in the board exam earlier this had secured good marks in internal assessment but had lesser marks in theory. However, the combined marks of theory and internal assessment touched the minimum criteria of 33 per cent and hence they passed the board exam. With the CBSE board scrapping that provision, several students found it difficult to clear to the exams. The CBSE had given the one-time relaxation to the class 10th students who appeared in the board exam earlier this year because they were the first batch after the mandatory board exam made a comeback.

The CBSE had introduced the Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation (CCE) scheme along with optional Board exam in 2010-11. However, the board decided to revoke it in 2017 and reintroduced the mandatory board examination after a gap of seven years. Over 10 lakh students are likely to appear for the CBSE class 10 examination in 2019.
