QS World University Rankings 2025: IITs in top 150, DU's rank improved; check list of top Indian Institutes
QS World University Rankings 2025 has been released. As per the global rankings, 61 per cent of Indian universities’ ranking has improved, with IIT Bombay gaining the top spot in India. Here's the list of top globally ranked institutes and Indian Institutes.
Quacquarelli Symonds released the QS World University Rankings 2025 on June 4. The rankings feature 1500 universities across 105 higher education systems. The rankings were unveiled in Washington D.C. after the QS Edu Data Summit. According to the rankings, 61 percent of Indian universities have improved their ranking, with IIT Bombay securing the top spot in India.
MIT topped, Cambridge University ranked 5th
This year, the ranking stands as the largest ever, underscoring the global commitment to academic excellence and innovation. For the 13th consecutive year, MIT maintained its position at the top, solidifying its reputation as a global leader in terms of higher education. The United States remained the country with 197 ranked institutions followed by the United Kingdom with 90 and China with 71 ranked institutions. The Imperial College, London secured the second position and the University of Oxford and Harvard University ranked third and fourth respectively. The University of Cambridge ranked fifth, further adding to the United Kingdom's reputation as a hub for world-class education.
IITs in the Top 150
Among the Indian institutes that made it to the list are the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, ranked 118, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, ranked 150. The Indian institutes that made it to the 150 on the list are the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. IIT Bombay stands at rank 118 and IIT Delhi has been ranked 150.
This year, the ranking of IISc has also increased and is in 211th place, IIT Kharagpur is in 222nd position, IIT Madras is in 227th place, and IIT Kanpur has secured 263rd rank.
The University of Delhi improved its rank
The University of Delhi has improved this year. As per the QS World University Rankings 2025, the central university has improved its rank from ninth last year to seventh this time. This year, DU jumped 79 ranks from 407 last year to 328.

QS Rankings: Significance
The QS World University Ranking has grown to be one of the most influential rankings in the world. This is one of the most trusted university rankings and serves as a global benchmark for academic excellence, institutional reputation, and research impact. In the ranking, the reputation of institutes is based on the higher education professionals, companies that hire graduates, the quality of teaching, the number of times the research articles get acknowledged, and the ratio of international students and faculty at universities.
The weightage of each indicator includes academic reputation which has a 30 percent weightage, employer reputation which has a 15 percent weightage, faculty/student ratio 10 percent and citations per faculty have a 20 percent weightage, and 5 percent each towards international faculty/international student ratio weightage and International Research Network, Employment Outcomes and Sustainability.
