Amid the prevailing heatwaves in the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) scaled up its warning to red alert in Delhi from its previously announced 'orange' alert.
Significantly, the IMD also warned of a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages” if people did not take precautions to limit their exposure to the sun. The Weather Department advised people to stay hydrated and avoid all non-essential travel, especially during the afternoon.
Temperature reported at 44.9 degrees celsius on June 16
The maximum temperature in Delhi on Sunday was recorded at 44.9 degrees Celsius, six degrees above normal. While, the minimum temperature was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius, which is 5.7 degrees above the average for this season. The Meteorological Department also predicted heat wave and warm night on Monday.
Temperatures above 40 for 35 days
The intervening night of Sunday–Monday was the third night in Delhi, which was extremely hot. At the same time, a heat wave blew through the city for the eighth consecutive day. For the 35th consecutive day, the maximum temperature in the city remained above 40 degrees. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a warning, advising commuters not to stay out unless necessary, as it increases the risk of getting sick amid the prevailing heatwave.

The Indian Metrological Department has also issued the weather forecast for the coming week, with temperatures being reported at more than 42 degrees Celsius. The weather department also predicted the possibility of rain or thunderstorms on June 20 and 21.
