Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday (May 20) lashed out at Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the Swati Maliwal assault case and said that a CM at whose residence a woman MP is beaten up “cannot ensure women’s safety”. He also came down heavily on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief over corruption and said that he joined the alliance of the same leaders whom he earlier dubbed as corrupt. The Home Minister described Kejriwal as a “shameless person” stating that he did not resign from the post of the CM despite being sent to jail.

His remarks came while addressing an election rally in South Delhi during his campaign for BJP candidate Ramvir Singh Bidhuri.

“I have never seen a shameless person like Kejriwal. Laluji (Former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav) went to jail after resigning due to corruption. Jayalalithaa (former Tamil Nadu CM Jayaram Jayalalithaa) went to jail after resigning and other ministers also went to jail after resigning. He is one such leader who went to jail but did not leave the post of Chief Minister,” he said.

Amit Shah on Swati Maliwal assault case

Reacting to the ongoing row over the alleged assault of AAP MP Swati Maliwal at Arvind Kejriwal’s CM residence on May 13, Shah said that a chief minister at whose residence a woman MP is beaten up cannot ensure women’s safety.

“A Chief Minister in whose residence a woman MP was beaten up cannot ensure women's safety,” he said.

Shah taken on Kejriwal over corruption

Slamming Kejriwal on the issue of corruption, the Home Minister said that the AAP chief listed out the names of corrupt leaders on an “Odd Day” and joined the hands with the same leaders on the “Even Day”.

“Arvind Kejriwal gives a speech on Odd Day with a long list of corrupt people and on Even Day he forms an alliance with the same corrupt people. Arvind Kejriwal, who calls himself a person of utmost honesty, is following the path of extreme dishonesty,” he said.

Shah said that he has not witnessed a person in politics who takes “U-turn like Arvind Kejriwal”.

“Kejriwal has come out of jail for elections. I have not seen a person in politics who takes a U-turn like Arvind Kejriwal. He left the job and formed an NGO. He used to swear on children that he would not join politics and ditched Anna. He said that he would not be chief minister and became CM thrice. He said that he would topple the Congress government, but he is sitting on Congress' lap to fight elections in Delhi. He wanted to register a case of corruption against Sheila Dikshit but he did not do it. But he was booked in a corruption case and went to jail. He said that he would not be with the corrupt but today he is sitting with corrupt parties like TMC, Congress, DMK,” Shah said.

“The people of Delhi have completely rejected the corrupt people who had united to enjoy the fruits of power. The unprecedented support of my brothers and sisters in the South Delhi rally makes it clear that the BJP's landslide victory on all the seven seats of Delhi is certain,” he said in a post on X.

Delhi will vote in the sixth phase of ongoing general elections on May 25. The results of the polls will be announced on June 4.
