Delhi: One dead as fire breaks out in 'illegal' paper godown in Shakarpur area

The fire broke out in a two-storey building in the Shakarpur area. Meanwhile, locals have claimed that the godown was running illegally in the residential area.

In a tragic incident, a 45-year-old was charred to death after a broke out in an 'illegal' paper godown in the East Delhi area on Wednesday. According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials, the fire erupted in a two-storey building and the deceased has been identified as Satendra Paswan. His body was recovered behind a mount of gutted cardboard in a room, they added.

A call was received at 2 am and six fire tenders were pressed into service. The dousing operation continued till 7 am, an official said. Speaking to the media, Paswan's sister Saaro Devi said that her brother used to work in the godown. "I had come in search of him at night but could not find him. Today, morning his body was recovered,” Devi said. “He is survived by his wife and children," she said.

Godown was running illegally: Locals

The locals have alleged that the godown was running illegally. Anil Sharma, who lives in the area said, “This godown was running illegally in our residential area. This is the second time a fire incident has occurred in it."

Fire at Income Tax CR building at ITO

This comes a day after a fire broke out inside the Income Tax CR Building in ITO area on Tuesday. Seven people -- five men and two women -- were rescued safely. One person, who received minor injuries, was taken to a nearby hospital, the DFS said. The fire had erupted in the building located opposite the old Police Headquarters, which is still occupied by the force for some of its units.
