The dead bodies of three labourers have been recovered from an under-construction site after over 22 hours of operation on Saturday. The NDRF team took out the bodies of the deceased labourers from the pit.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), civic agencies, fire service, and police undertook the rescue operation.
Notably, the tragic incident unfolded after massive rains lashed the national capital in the early morning of Friday. Due to torrential rains, the temporary huts of the labourers collapsed into a pit at a construction site.
According to DFS officials, the bodies of three labourers have been pulled from the rubble. Two of them have been identified as Santosh Kumar Yadav (19) and Santosh (38). The third labourer is yet to be identified. The bodies were taken to Safdarjung Hospital. Cranes were used to remove debris while water was pumped out of the foundation pit to recover the bodies, the officials said.
"A tree fell amid the heavy rains yesterday. Rooms made for labourers also caved in. One of the labourers belonged to Bihar's Supaul district, the other one was from Araria district" said Shrawan Yadav, relative of Santosh Yadav.
With this, the number of people killed in rain-related incidents in Delhi has climbed to eight. Meanwhile, a search operation is still underway to ensure that no one else is trapped under the rubble.
Delhi Airport canopy collapse
Although the rain was much-awaited in the national capital, which witnessed intense hot weather in last few weeks, the heavy rains have incurred a lot of damage to Delhi. The rains caused water logging in various areas and heavy traffic jams on roads. Meanwhile, roof collapse at T1 terminal of the Delhi airport was also attributed to the torrential rains.
According to the officials, the incident occurred around 5:00 am on Friday. Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 collapsed, the officials had said. One person lost his life in the tragic accident, while eight are reported injured.
