Amid a severe heatwave, Delhi's peak power demand crossed 8000 megawatts (MW) on Wednesday, marking the highest demand ever recorded in the national capital. On Tuesday afternoon, the demand had already surged to an all-time high of 7717 MW, officials reported. The previous all-time high peak power demand in Delhi was recorded at 7,695 MW on June 29, 2022. The current surge in demand underscores the extreme heat conditions the city is experiencing.
Heatwave conditions and weather alerts
Delhi is currently enduring an intense heatwave, with temperatures steadily rising. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued heatwave conditions across many parts of Delhi, with severe conditions in some areas. A red alert has been issued for the next four days, with maximum temperatures expected to range between 44 to 47 degrees Celsius.
Government response
During a press conference, Delhi minister and AAP leader Atishi highlighted the government’s efforts to manage the power supply. "Despite the peak power demand crossing over 7000 megawatts, Delhi has managed to supply 24-hour electricity. Yesterday, the temperature reached 48 degrees. The Kejriwal government ensured there were no power cuts or load shedding," Atishi stated.
She further assured that the government and the Discoms are prepared to meet the rising demand.
