A widow was set afire by her seven relatives, including mother-in-law, over a property dispute in the Hazrat Nizamuddin area of South Delhi, said a police officer here on Sunday. The victim suffered 80 per cent burns, he added.

According to the police, on Friday, Yasmeen Alvi, 35, was first assaulted by her three brothers-in-law, their wives and mother-in-law and was set on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

On listening to Yasmeen's cry for help, her minor daughter who was playing outside ran to help her mother. She later informed others. Some residents informed the police, which admitted her to Safdarjung Hospital with 80 per cent burns. She is undergoing treatment. An FIR has been registered against Yasmeen's relatives on the basis of her statement. Yasmeen, a native of UP, married Amir Alvi in 2009. Since Amir's death due to some illness, she had been living in her house with three daughters.

"Her in-laws rented out the property. Yasmeen had been demanding her part in the property as per her husband's will," the police officer said. Yasmeen's relatives often assaulted her on the issue and on Friday they planned to kill her and set her on fire," he said. The police have booked her in-laws and are probing the case. No arrest has been made so far.
