Mumbai woman conned by 'KBC officer' over Rs 35L lottery win
Ameerunnissa Abdul Kalam Sheikh (25), a Kandivali resident, told police she got calls from numbers that flashed as 'KBC officer' and 'Government of India' on her cellphone, he said.
A Mumbai woman has approached police claiming she was conned of Rs 83,000 by unidentified caller/s who said she had won a Rs 35 lakh lottery, an official said on Monday.
Ameerunnissa Abdul Kalam Sheikh (25), a Kandivali resident, told police she got calls from numbers that flashed as 'KBC officer' and 'Government of India' on her cellphone, he said.
"Sheikh was contacted several times through a video- calling app between August 30 and September 16 informing her that she had won Rs 35 lakh in a lottery and would have to pay a processing fee of Rs 18,000," he said.
"Another call from a number that flashed as 'government of India' informed her she needed to pay Rs 25,000 as tax and a penalty of Rs 40,000 for giving wrong information to the government. After she deposited the money in an account given to her and realised she was duped, she approached police
on September 26," he said.
A cheating case has been registered against as-yet unidentified owners of the mobile numbers from which she got the calls, the Kandivali police station official said.
