An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 on the Richter scale struck the Surguja district of Chhattisgarh on Monday, according to the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at around 8.4 pm. The epicenter of the quake was at Latitude 23.21 and Longitude 83.22 and depth of 10 km below the ground.
"Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.8, Occurred on 28-08-2023, 20:04:31 IST, Lat: 23.21 & Long: 83.22, Depth: 10 Km, Region: Surguja, Chhattisgarh, India," tweeted National Center for Seismology.
Earthquake in Ambikapur
The second earthquake of 3.9 magnitude was reported in the Ambikapur district of Chhattisgarh. The tremors were felt at around 8:26 pm. The epicenter of the earthquake at Fundurdihari in the city. "Earthquake of Magnitude:3.9, Occurred on 28-08-2023, 20:26:36 IST, Lat: 23.13 & Long: 83.28, Depth:11 Km, Location:10km E of Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, India," it said.
After feeling the tremors, people came out of their homes and reached to safer places. However, no injuries or damage have been reported so far in the seismic event.
Earthquake tremors felt earlier this month
Earthquake tremors were felt on August 13 in Gorela-Pendra-Marwahi and Korba districts of Chhattisgarh. The earthquake had also caused cracks on the walls of many houses in the area. The intensity of this earthquake was measured at 3.6 on the Richter scale. For the last one year, the cases of the earthquake are continuously increasing in the state of Chhattisgarh.
Why do earthquakes happen?
In recent times, an increase in earthquakes has been seen in many areas of the country. There are 7 tectonic plates inside our earth. These plates keep on rotating in their place continuously. However, sometimes there is conflict or friction between them. For this reason, the incidents of earthquakes are seen on the earth.
