Countries across the globe have been rooting for equal rights for the third gender. It is important to acknowledge transgenders and provide them a dignified place in the society. India's neighbouring country Pakistan seems to be slowly inching towards achieving the same. In what can be said as a historic move, a private news channel in Pakistan has recruited a transgender as their news anchor.
If Twitter is anything to go by, then TV channel Kohenoor News has presented Maavia Malik as their news anchor. This move is being hailed as the first for the nation. Videos of Maavia reading out news are doing the rounds on social media and people are appreciating it.
With this, Pakistan has joined a league of countries that aim to give a proper representation to transgenders in the society. In India, Padmini Prakash was the first Indian to host a news show on Lotus TV while Apsara Reddy worked with the BBC.
Twitterati were quite elated at this move and took to their account to express their feelings. ''#Pakistan first transgender news caster on screen now - Maavia Malik. Great move.we must give and provide equal opportunities for them rather they will bagging dancing of the road. They deserve education and to be respected as well,'' wrote a user. ''First time in Pakistan television history, a transgender named Maavia Malik has been given the opportunity to become a news anchor. Brilliant innitiative!,'' wrote another.'
Meanwhile, this year transgenders from Pakistan will also serve as volunteers during the Hajj pilgrimage.
