Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a legendary figure who showed people way to fight even the toughest battle by non-violence. The man whose armour was truth and love has unique approach towards life. Born on October 2, 1869 Gandhiji or Bapu as he is fondly and reverentially addressed was an influential personality in India's freedom struggle. Bapu throughout his life struggled to abolish deep-rooted evils in the society. He was against the practice of untouchability and caste system prevalent in Hindu society. He shook British regime with Dandi Salt March in 1930 and Quit India in 1942. Both the movements became popular among masses, moreover, the Quit India served as the death knell for years of atrocities by Britishers.

October 2 is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly voted to celebrate Gandhi's idea of ahimsa. Today, not just India but other countries of the world are also commemorating 148th birth anniversary of Bapu. At Beijing's Chaoyang Park, people gathered to remember Bapu. Indian Embassy's cultural team sung 'Vaishana Jana' and school children recited popular quotes of Mahatma Gandhi

India's one of the premier institutes, Indian Institute of Management Rohtak has decided to promote Khadi on the occasion. The institute through Khadi ashram will encourage students to go Khadi.
