After the big announcement of Uttar Pradesh’s historic city Allahabad’s name changed back to ‘Prayagraj’, many people were left confused about how to react. While some were happy that the identity of the city was revived with the new name, others were not really happy and felt it as the tongue twister. The state’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was quoted as saying on Saturday, "It might be the wish of many people that Allahabad can be renamed Prayagraj. It will be a very good message. If everyone agrees, we should know this city as Prayagraj and it can be a good start."
This reclaiming of the city’s old Vedic name ‘prayag’ comes just in time for the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which will take place in January next year. The city was called ‘prayag’ during the Vedic period and is also mentioned in the Vedaa as the location where Brahma (the creator of the universe) attended a ritual sacrifice after creation.
