New Delhi: Chennai was brought to a grinding halt following the worst showers recorded by the city in a hundred years. The floods, that followed the torrential rains, badly affected the capital city of Tamil Nadu, crippling normal life of the citizens.

Amidst the horror, there were also instances of a few heroes seen trying their best to restore normalcy to this temple town. The crisis saw actors, army personnel and politicians join hands to lend the city a helping hand.

Greatness, they say, comes from the most ordinary people in unordinary circumstances. It is in this spirit that the story of an auto driver in Mumbai deserves your attention.

Last week, Mumbai-based designer Shalini Girish was in an auto rickshaw talking to someone over the phone in Tamil. When she disconnected, the auto driver asked if she knew anyone who was affected by the floods. She replied in the affirmative, following which the conversation turned to Chennai and the devastation witnessed.

On reaching her destination, Shalini was taken aback as the driver refused to accept the travel fare. “Use this money to help the people of your city in any way possible,” he said in Hindi. “I'm poor so this is all I can give. May Allah keep them safe.”

Shalini shared this incident on her Facebook account and the post was shared 1700 times within a span of 24 hours.

Well, as they say. Not all heroes get their due attention. Kudos to the driver!
