2-hour old baby Teddy remembered as world's youngest organ donor
“He lived and died a hero. It's impossible to explain how proud we are of him,” said by the parents of a boy Teddy who lived for just 100 minutes and became the world's youngest organ donor.
In the twelfth week of her pregnancy, doctors informed Jess Evans that one of her twin babies is suffering from the birth defect anencephaly and would not survive. Anencephaly is a rare condition that prevents the skull and brain from developing.
Even after learning the unfortunate fact, Jess Evans and her fiancé Mike Houlston didn't give up hope and continued with the pregnancy.
“We thought that even if we had a moment with him, or 10 minutes, or an hour, that time was the most precious thing that we would ever experience,” the British couple told the Daily Mirror.
On 22nd April last year, Teddy passed away within two hours of being born, but her mother decided to explore if her son could become the organ donor.
And what could have been the most sorrowful moment of their life i.e. losing their child, turned out to be a life saving act and a proud moment for the parents.
Just minutes after Teddy took his last breathe; doctors at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff conducted the surgery to donate his kidneys and heart valves. And since then, Teddy's kidneys have since been used to save an adult's life, reported the Daily mail.
“Knowing part of your loved one is living on in someone else is comforting,” said Jess, Teddy's mother.
The proud parents are now raising money for the charity '2 Wish Upon A Star' that helps bereaved parents. They hope that Teddy's heart-touching story can help other families who have lost a child.
