Thrissur: Despite being a punishable offence, dowry system still prevails in our society. Many Indian families haven't been able to go past this unfortunate practice.
The main reason behind the existence of dowry in current times is fear. Families are afraid that they will not find a decent match for their daughter and so, they are ready to give dowry. And what's worse is that there are some people who believe that not giving dowry is a social shame.
It is need of the hour that we stand up against this evil practice to bring an end to it. And a woman in Thrissur, Kerala does exactly the same. Named Remya Ramachandran, she refused to marry the groom after he demanded dowry. She cancelled her wedding when her would-be-husband asked for money and gold.
Afterwards, she posted a confession on Facebook regarding the incident. It went like this-
“Friends,
Here is an announcement for people asking me about my marriage. The man, who used to say, before the engagement, that he needed just me, is now demanding Rs 5 lakh and 50 sovereigns of gold. Since I'm completely not in favour of dowry and believe it will be a losing proposition to buy into a family that cannot keep its word, I have decided to cancel this alliance. Thank you.

Now we all should appreciate her guts and take a lesson from this to not give in to the demand of dowry.
Her Facebook post went viral and won her accolades for the bold step that she took. Despite being written in a local language, her confession got massive support and shares, for which she was extremely thankful.
She wrote, “I would like to explain that it was my declaration of a decision. Never had the intention to hurt anyone specifically. Please don't use my post for personalized humiliation, instead use it against our social norms.”
