The incident of 16 December 2012 shook the entire nation and hung an eternal question mark on the issue of women safety in India. From road to parliament, many things underwent a change. But if we talk about the numbers, change is not that evident. 

The upheaval at the time of the unfortunate incident indicated that things are finally going to change for the daughters of India. But the numbers are the witness that everyday 92 women are subjected to rape and among those, 4 are happening in Delhi. 

What do the figures of the year 2016 say? 

The year when this gory incident happened, the number of rape cases didn’t see any difference. In the year 2015, according to National Crime Bureau, 33,707 cases of rapes have been registered. In the following year 2016, this number increased to 36,707. Just imagine, where do we find ourselves even after that blood-curdling incident?

According to NCRB, 2016 recorded the maximum number of rape cases in 10 years.

South Africa 

Every year, approximately 500,000 cases of rapes are registered. This makes South Africa no. 1 when rape crimes are concerned. According to South Africa police, 41 percent of total children population is a victim of rape or sexual abuse. Of all the rape cases registered, 28,892 rapes have been committed on children of 18 years or below. 

Sweden 

Sweden ranks no. 2 in rape crime. One in four women has been subjected to rape in this country. In the year 2014, 6,620 cases of rapes have been registered. 

America 

According to George Mason University, in every 3 women, 1 is a rape victim. 19.3 percent of women and 2 percent of men have been subjected to sexual violence in their life. Every year, 293,000 people are raped in America and in 98% of cases, the convicts are not punished by the law. 

India 

According to NCRB, 2010 saw a 7.5 percent increase in crime against women. The victims are usually aged between 18 to 30. Even after the gruesome episode of 16th December 2012, the status quo of women safety in India stands still. In every 20 minutes, a woman is being raped in India.
