Farmers have always been the backbone of India. Around 70 per cent of rural households still depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihood. The Modi government has taken several measures to boost productivity and, thus, the income of farmers in the last few years.
For many in rural areas, dairy farming is an important source of income. The dairy industry has emerged as one way for women's empowerment, the eradication of poverty, and the doubling of farmers' income. The intervention of technology in recent years has increased yields and farmers' incomes as compared to agriculture-based activities.
With India emerging as the 3rd largest ecosystem for startups globally, the dairy sector has also seen several startups set foot to create a visible impact in the Indian dairy ecosystem. Mooofarm, a dairy startup incorporated in 2019, is at play in aiding dairy farmers to access quality cattle, feed, financial linkages, and advisory services through a phygital model.
The startup has brought positive changes in the lives of lakhs of farmers by bridging the technology gap to help usher marginalised dairy farmers into the 21st century. Its model involves streamlining the entire process, making it easy for farmers to make profits. Currently landscaped across two states, Punjab and Rajasthan, Mooofarm’s revenue has grown 125x over the last 4 years, a testament to the economic opportunity present in India’s dairy ecosystem.
The dairy industry employs over 10 crore people, of whom the majority are small-scale and marginal farmers, with a significant portion being women. MoooFarm founder Param Singh said that the raw milk supply has improved with the increase in output as farmers are understanding the importance of technology in traditional farming practices.
"The progressive approach and user-friendly app-to-farm interface have been catalysts in turning the dreams of farmers into realities and changing their destinies," Singh said.
In line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of fostering an ‘Aatmanirbhar’ India, the self-sustained progress of farmers within the animal husbandry and dairying sectors holds significant importance. An illustration of this can be seen through the commitment of Mooofarm to uphold its brand commitment to making farmers profitable’, which seamlessly aligns with the ongoing momentum of cultivating self-reliant farmers.
