The prices of LPG cylinders are likely to be slashed by Rs 200, said sources on Tuesday. The Centre may announce the cut in the price in the next 24 hours, added sources. It's good news for the middle class as the prices of almost all essential items have remained high for the past few months. The cut in LPG price will give a big relief to people. The current price of a 14-kg LGP cylinder is around Rs 1,100.
The news comes in the election season as the price hikes issue is going to be one of the poll issues. In recent times, opposition parties targeted the government over inflation. The prices of tomatoes are still in the news.
However, the government has been taking several initiatives to check the price hike.
Meanwhile, the decision to cut LGP cylinder price will help the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the states- where elections are due this year. Key states- Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan will go to election at the end of this year. The LPG prices affect the kitchen budget which subsequently irks women voters.
Earlier on Sunday, August 27, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made several poll announcements, including providing gas cylinders for Rs 450.
"Women will get cooking gas at Rs 450 in the holy month of Sawan. Later, a permanent system will be evolved in this regard. I have also transferred Rs 250 into the accounts of 1.25 crore women so that they can celebrate Rakhi (on Tuesday) well. The rest of the Rs 1,000 (under Ladli Behna Yojana) will be credited in September," the CM said.
