New Delhi: It seems like all the efforts made by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer to give a new direction to the faded digital media company have paid off. Internet portal Yahoo has confounded its critics by becoming the highest traffic website from US desktops, according to latest figures released by comScore.

The latest Comscore data shows the website has attracted more hits than nearest rival Google by a margin of three million during December 2013.

In total, Yahoo received 195 million unique user hits, compared with 192 million for Google, 175 million for Microsoft, 140 million for Facebook, and 120 million for AOL.

ComScore pegged the overall US desktop internet explorers at 224,057 million people. More visits translate into the potential to bring in more money from online ads.

Earlier, Mayer has made several steps in improving Yahoo's popularity on smartphones and tablets. Yahoo has made a series of strategic purchases to strengthen its position on iOS and Android. These include the News Digest app Summly created by Nick D'Aloisio. For Android, the Aviate launcher, a location and context aware launcher that customises itself to the user was another key Yahoo purchase.

They key question for Mayer at this moment is whether she can turn this large hit count into a profitable business.
