New Delhi: BlackBerry's low cost touchscreen smartphone, the Z3, which was first launched Indonesia last month, is all set to arrive in India with a price tag of Rs 11,000. In Indonesia, the phone was launched as a limited edition model — the BlackBerry Z3 Jakarta Edition — featuring the inscription “Jakarta” on the back of the phone to commemorate the launch of the first BlackBerry smartphone built specifically for the Indonesian market.
BlackBerry already has a stronghold in a developing market like Indonesia. It's the first smartphone BlackBerry has released since John Chen became CEO in November and the first BlackBerry smartphone to be designed by Foxconn, as part of a new relationship BlackBerry announced in December with the China-based electronics manufacturer. Foxconn is best known as a builder of iPhones and iPads.
The Z3 is a 5-inch touchscreen phone running the new BlackBerry 10 Operating System version 10.2.1.
It is a mid-range handset, featuring a 5-inch full touch display with a 540×960 resolution. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC which has a dual-core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM. The smartphone sports a 5MP rear camera and a 1.1MP front-facing camera.
The 5MP rear camera is good for taking images given the settings are right, but the 1.1MP front camera is no good. The camera has got auto-focus and also has the Time Shift mode along with some great filters.
The Z3 is 3G enabled, and has all the standard fare — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and even Miracast support. The device gets its juice from a big 2500mAh battery. There is no LTE in this model.
At 164g, the Z3 comes in at just a touch lighter than the Z30's 170g. The device fits snugly in the hand and it's not slippery at all thanks to the textured back. But it may prove to be a bit too wide for those with smaller hands. Overall, it has a pretty decent built and doesn't at all feel “cheap.”
There's no removable battery door on the Z3, and has the SIM and SD card slots on the right side of the device, under a flimsy little door. On the left are the power and volume buttons. A 3.5mm headphone jack sits on the top, on the bottom there is a microUSB port.
