New Delhi: Twitter has purchased social data provider Gnip for an undisclosed amount. By accessing data from various social networks, Gnip collects the content and makes it to company-specific sets, and then sends them to organizations around the world.
Launched in 2008, Gnip (pronounced guh-nip) serves to clients like Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare, Wordpress, Google+, Facebook, and YouTube.
Gnip, which has a four year partnership with Twitter, has delivered more than 2.3 trillion tweets in 42 countries, providing insights into business intelligence, marketing, finance, professional services, and public relations.
The acquisition would mean the company taking on a new role of packaging and selling data, and offer businesses “more sophisticated data sets” and “better data enrichments.” Twitter said it will work with Gnip to extend its existing data platform, both through its public APIs and the Boulder-based startup's offerings.
Twitter said in a blog post that the Gnip deal allowed it to burrow more deeply into the 500 million tweets sent daily on its network.
Currently on an acquisition spree, Twitter has recently picked up Android lockscreen startup Cover, as well as social TV analytics firms Mesagraph and SecondSync.
