New Delhi: India consumers are migrating heavily from feature phones to smartphones in a big way. The nation witnessed an explosive growth in the smartphone arena by registering a whooping 229 per cent  year over year (YoY) in the third quarter of 2013 (3Q13), according to International Data Corporation's (IDC) APEJ Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. The vendors shipped 12.8 million devices.
 
The IDC data showed that Samsung maintained its leadership spot with about 33 per cent of the market share as its shipments grew close to 36 per cent powered by new launches across all price points.
 
The second spot was held by Micromax which grabbed a 17 per cent marketshare, and its new marketing and advertising push are expected to show results in the coming quarters. Karbonn stood at the third spot with 11 per cent share. However, once a leader, Nokia came in a distant fourth with close to 5 per cent market share based on new Lumia 625 and 925 devices.

The report noted that the phablet (5 to 6.99-inch smartphone) segment showed a sustained growth capturing 23 per cent of overall market, the numbers for top local vendors such as Micromax and Karbonn witnessed a slowdown.
