New Delhi: The government plans to make available 2 kg cooking gas cylinders, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Sunday while launching the facility of online booking of new cooking gas connections.
"We are now planning to introduce a 2 kg cylinder that can be easily carried. This will be particularly beneficial for the rural people and poor who cannot afford to pay the price of a 14.2 kg or even 5 kg cylinder," he said.
The previous UPA government introduced an easily-portable 5 kg cylinder priced at Rs 155 in October 2013.
The 5 and 2 kg cooking gas cylinders are designed to cater to the requirements of all sections of society including those from economically weaker sections, students and migrant labourers, many of whom who do not have proof of address.
Pradhan said the online booking facility will end the problems customers face in physically going to gas agencies for a new connection.
"Consumers can now book a new connection online. It will be verified within 48 hours and a person from the nearest LPG agency will deliver a new connection at the door-step in next 3-4 days," he said.
"I compliment the public sector oil marketing companies for aligning their business processes with the Digital India Vision," the minister added.
