Five of tech's most successful Indian women

New Delhi, Nov 14: Being a female in the male-dominated tech industry is challenging, and comes with own set of difficulties. But nonetheless, it is hard to overlook the presence the Indian women have created in the field of technology. They have aptly demonstrated their grit and passion in making their presence felt in their chosen profession. India TV takes a look at a list of top five who have really made a difference!Ruchi SanghviRaised in industrial town of Pune, Ruchi Sanghvi was 23 years old when she became the first female engineer at Facebook. Sanghvi led product management and strategy for Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect, and developed the news feed and saw the company grow from a small start-up into the world's biggest social network. In 2010, Sanghvi left Facebook to form her own company, Cove, which provides online collaboration tools for groups, with her husband, Aditya Agarwal. But the start-up was quickly snapped up by cloud file syncing and sharing company Dropbox, along with its founders. Cove's team– Aditya Agarwal, Ruchi Sanghvi, Akhil Wable and Joshua Jenkins – all joined Dropbox. According to Sanghvi it was difficult to break into the boy's club and she had reportedly changed her demeanor and style of working in order to better fit into the “aggressive” environment. Kiran Mazumdar-ShawShe is India's first biotech entrepreneur. She founded Biocon in 1978 to create industrial enzymes. Biocon, today a billion-dollar company and Asia's largest biopharma concern, took birth in the garage of Mazumdar-Shaw's rented home in Bangalore, with a seed capital of Rs 10,000. The company was initially into extracting papain, an enzyme from payaya. But by 1990, Biocon started an in-house research programme in solid substrate fermentation technology that permitted it to create enzymes from pilot to plant level. Later the company diversified into a wide array of products and services including diabetes, oncology and auto-immune disease. Mazumdar also represents the biopharma industry at various levels. She is currently on the Advisory Council of the Government's Department of Biotechnology. Besides she also has interest in arts and has authored 'Ale and Arty,' a Coffee table book about brewing beer illustrated by paintings of some of India's renowned artists.Padmasree WarriorPadmasree Warrior is chief technology and strategy officer at Cisco Systems. Prior to Cisco, Warrior joined Motorola in 1984. She was among only a few women in its Arizona facility and served in a wide range of roles over the course of her twenty-three years at the company, eventually achieving the position of Chief Technology Officer in its Semiconductor Products Sector, which became Freescale Semiconductor. In 2003, she became Motorola's first female executive and in 2005 she was promoted to executive vice president. In 2007, she left Motorola to become CTO at Cisco Systems. Born and brought up in the city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, Warrior holds a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, from which she was recently recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award.Kalpana MargabandhuKalpana Margabandhu is IBM director for WebSphere Development. With over 25 years of industry experience, Kalpana leads the WebSphere mission in IBM India's Software Lab. She was chairperson of the IBM Indian Women's Leadership Council (IWLC) and was responsible for driving various initiatives to enhance the technical, professional and personal development of women employees at IBM India. Hard work, focus on excellence and a positive attitude are Kalpana's motto for success. She is also on the Board of IBM India.Vinita GuptaVinita is a well-known Indian American woman technology entrepreneur in California's Silicon Valley and has funded other technology firms. She is the founder and chairman of Digital Link Corporation (now Quick Eagle Networks), a telecommunications products company she founded in 1985 in Palo Alto, California, and ran as CEO, went public in 1994. She now sits on the boards of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, the Indian School of Business and Maitri, a Silicon Valley nonprofit. For two consecutive years, Working Woman Magazine has named Digital Link one of the top 500 women-owned businesses in the United States.
