New Delhi: Popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp has crossed 600 million monthly active users, CEO Jan Koum has announced. In April the user base of the app was at 500 million monthly active users, which means it has added 100 million users in just four months.
WhatsApp is followed by Tencent's WeChat with 438 million active users, and Viber with 100 million active users.
The messaging service has also announced that it has crossed 60 million monthly active users in India.
WhatsApp and other mobile messaging services like WeChat and Viber have seen a surge in popularity among Indian users in the last few years as these apps have made it cheaper for users to make calls and send messages using the internet, where their services are free and the user need only pay for the data charges incurred.
