New Delhi: Samsung's recently launched Galaxy Grand 2 is “grander” than its predecessor. The device promises larger screen real estate, premium looks, good camera, more RAM and a bigger battery at an estimated Rs 23,000. It is a dual-SIM device (GSM+GSM) which features a 5.25-inch HD TFT display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and has an 8MP AF + LED Flash / 1.9MP (HD) camera, 2,600mAh battery, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB internal Memory expandable up to 64GB using microSD card.On the other hand, homegrown handset marker Micromax took its Canvas series a step ahead with the launch of Canvas Tubo with full-HD 1080p display. The company has even roped in Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman as the brand ambassador. Looking different from other Canvas phones, the Turbo dons an aluminum frame in a unibody design, which gives it an edge over its rivals. The phone has a 5-inch IPS (1080×1920 pixels) full-HD display with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch. The phone comes is powered by a MediaTek 6589T quad-core Cortex A7 chipset clocking at 1.5GHz and PowerVR SGX544 GPU, coupled with 2GB of RAM.Let us do a detailed comparison to find out more about these phones: Build quality and screen displayMicromax Canvas Turbo comes with premium build quality. It dons an aluminum frame in a unibody design. It has matte finished back, slightly curved edges and an edge-to-edge running display with very thin bezel. The phone offers better build quality than the Canvas 4 and Canvas HD, and it even feels more compact. The front fascia of the device features a 5-inch full-HD display, three capacitive touch buttons for navigation below it, and the earpiece, front camera, notification LED and the sensor array above it. It also features the Power/Screen lock key and the Volume rocker key at the right hand side, and two micro-SIM trays on the left hand side. The Micro-USB port sits at the top edge of the phone, while the 3.5mm headset jack is located at the bottom edge. The Canvas Turbo has also been given four preloaded themes, namely Mint, Mocha, Raspberry and the default theme that bring minor changes in the phone's colour scheme. The UI of Canvas Turbo features the same setting toggles shortcut that are found in stock Android and adds some of its own as well, for quick access to Airplane Mode, Battery status, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, Data connection, Data usage, User (audio) Profiles, Brightness, Screen backlight timeout and Auto rotation.Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 features the Android Jelly Bean 4.3 OS which works in conjunction with the TouchWiz UI. MemoryCanvas Turbo has only 16GB of internal memory space, which means that only 13.5GB is actually available to use. There is no microSD card slot for expansion of memory, which is considered to be a downside. However, the Galaxy Grand 2 features an internal memory of 8GB which can be expanded to 64GB through a microSD card.Winner: Galaxy Grand 2Camera Canvas Turbo sports a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front facing camera. The camera app included in the smartphone offers features like Normal, HDR, Smile detection, Panorama and Scene detection shot modes. It also offers a burst mode, letting users click up to 99 shots at once, in addition to GIF Animation, 3D Panorama and Remove Object modes. The photo mode allows you to modify settings like Exposure, colour effect, ISO and white balance, among others. There's a self timer of up to 10 seconds and a Zero shutter delay setting, as well. While, images taken in ambient light conditions appear to be just fine, the Canvas Turbo's camera also failed to take good quality images in low-light conditions. The color reproduction in images taken by Turbo also appears to be below average. The Grand 2 comes with an 8 MP rear shooter and the front facing camera of 2 MP which helps the user for video calling. In the current phone, Samsung has not offered any improvement in the camera, as it has embedded the previous Galaxy Grand in the new device. Minor improvements include the LED flash which makes the device to capture high resolution images in dark. The Digital Image Stability helps you to take crystal clear shots even in low light. The images taken in ambient lighting conditions seem to be pretty decent.
