New Delhi: Google has said it would buy artificial intelligence company called DeepMind for $400 million. The Internet giant confirmed the deal after Re/code inquired about it, but declined to specify a price.

The London-based DeepMind combines machine learning and neuroscience to create "general-purpose learning algorithms." DeepMind's website says the company's initial commercial applications were simulations, e-commerce, and games. The company was founded by games prodigy and neuroscientist Demis Hassabis, along with Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman.

According to Google, the acquisition is in large part an artificial intelligence talent acquisition, as Hassabis in particular is a child prodigy in chess who was later called “probably the best games player in history” by the Mind Sports Olympiad.

Google's reported acquisition of DeepMind comes less than a year after the Web giant announced the opening of a new lab that uses a quantum computer to advance machine learning.
