Mumbai: The lavish Bharat Diamond Bourse in the Bandra-Kurla complex could lose its importance to Surat in years to come.

Officially the rates stand at Rs-40,000-45,000 sq ft. But they are expected to shoot up to Rs 60,000 a sq ft. This rate has left diamond merchants disgruntled, who now intent to shift their base to Surat.

Land for the proposed Surat Diamond Bourse will be allotted by the Gujarat government next month in the 2,000 acre Surat Dream City, being set up on the lines of the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), said Pratap Padode, Chairman, First Smart Cities Council.

The Council has along with an economic research firm Indicus Analytics, put together a list of the Top 20 Promising Indian Cities, with a population of over a million.

“Surat which is the world's fourth largest growing city, is to be the development model for India's 300 Tier-II cities; and why not, considering the Microsoft CityNext Initiative to constitute it as a smart city,” said Padode.
