New Delhi: Amazon is in the process of creating its own brands in the fast growing fashion and lifestyle segment in the country.

A report published in The Economic Times said the move would make India the first country where US e-commerce giant has its own private fashion labels.

For this the US-based company is building its own team and is looking to hire people from leading online fashion retailers Myntra and Jabong, the report suggests.

Private brands, which a retailer creates on its own through association with product developers or fashion designers, gives an edge in terms of higher margins and lower ad spends.

A few years ago, Amazon launched Pinzon, its own brand of sheets and towels. It also sells a private label called AmazonBasics, which includes products such as batteries, keyboards and USB cords. However, the company is not too aggressive in marketing the private-label brands in recent years and rarely mentions them in media appearances.

Few months ago, the parent unit of Amazon placed an advertisement in social media site LinkedIn for the job of a category head for private brands to be based in Bengaluru. "This position is responsible for leading and managing the private label brands to maximise customer experience, sales, margin and turns," the post had said. "The person who joins our team in this critical leadership position must share our passion and commitment to giving Indian customers high quality fashion products”
